On to the race

Shortly after the start, a solid wind shift made the windward leg more of a shy reach, which meant you could power towards the top end. Just make sure to allow for the tide – it was PUMPING past the mark in true, light-winds-at-Rosebud fashion. And once you rounded that big orange marker, you turned and screamed out across the water.
For Catamarans, Ben Prior continues to improve, showing he is more than a one trick pony. Watch this space, he has just notched up some podium results. In the monohulls, Graeme and Peter White did not appreciate the lighter breeze and slipped back for the first time in the season. However Ross Kilborn loved it, also chalking up some time at the front of the fleet. Jo Riley entered and thoroughly enjoyed herself too, happily moving about the course. Thankfully she now is on the correct side of the line at the starting gun now.
In the results, while some compete for Yardstick glory, there’s a real contest brewing in the handicap division in the monos – 3 boats are on equal points. You don’t want to miss a thing in this series now, because it’s on!

A massive welcome to the water must also go out to Grant Brookes, who has recently purchased a Nacra 14sq. This makes 4 Nacras in the compound (state titles every weekend perhaps?) and there are whispers that others are also out to purchase another as well. And on that, the yard is looking FULL – an excellent problem to have! – and we are about to build kayak storage to accommodate some more new members and their interests. Welcome to Garry and Sue Francis.

And yes, the day did get hot. Really hot. So hot in fact that in the afternoon, Sam Chiodo decided it was time for a swim. So after securing his tiller (‘So the boat couldn’t move’), he jumped overboard for a swim. Unfortunately he soon realised that boats drift faster than you can swim. Just follow Dory’s advice in ‘Finding Nemo’ mate – just keep swimming.

A lighter day proved to be good fun. John Smith made the special trip up from King Island and stood ready to rescue alongside Geoff Ludwick, and later in the day they certainly did that. I’m not sure if you’ve seen it, but there’s a famous movie based on something in real life about a boat sinking? Well, Mark Purcell did his best recreation of that moment when he left the bungs out of his boat, calling out across the course ‘Rescue One, HELP!’

As I said at the start of the season, this year it is all about more people on the water in more ways, more often. And when the day glassed out, we certainly had that. Big thank you to Sean and Anna Purcell for taking out the club Biscuit (inflatable toy) and towing around the Beeson, Purcell and Balmain kids. Word on the street is that they were grinning ear to ear and loved every minute of it, with the Balmain boys not wanting to leave the club at the end of the day. That’s exactly what we want – big smiles and fun for everyone, regardless of sailing!
